Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.Īlso, the Israelites made league with the Canaanites though commanded not to and it was a snare unto them for not obeying the Lord’s voice. And it grieved Samuel and he cried unto the LORD all night.Īnd Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.įor rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.Īnd Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.Īnd he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.īut Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
Hence for example, it’s unlawful to kill and it’s righteous to have mercy, yet Saul was rejected for not obeying the word of the Lord to kill Amalek when he spared him: Obeying Ahayah’s voice must be done and precedes His commands in His law. Then answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.
That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your Alahayim: Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:Īnd say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD Alahayim of Israel Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant, The first commandment given to Israel upon coming out of Egypt was as follows:
